Sigra taz-Znuber- ritratt ta' Stephen Gatt

Din is-sigra ta' daqs medju ghandha weraq qishom labar li jikbru f'pari. Taghmel koni rgiel u nisa (prinjoli) fl-istess sigra. L-irgiel ikunu safranin u jkun fihom it-trab dakkar, filwaqt li n-nisa jaghmlu z-zerriegha wara li jiddakkru. Wara d-dakra, iz-zerriegha tiehu kwazi tlett snin biex timmatura.

Fir-ritratt jidhru koni nisa li nfethu ghax immaturaw.

Din is-sigra hija tipika tal-Mediterran. Kien hemm zmien fejn inqerdet ghal kollox, izda regghet iddahhlet maz-zmien. Komuni.

Pinus halepensis (Aleppo Pine)

Aleppo Pine - photo by Stephen Gatt

This medium sized tree has got needle-like leaves that grow in pairs. Male and female cones grow on the same tree. The male cones are yellow because they contain pollen, while the female cones produce the seeds after pollenation and fertilization. The seeds take about three years to mature within the female cones.

In the photo one can see the mature female cones.

This tree is typical of the Mediterranean. There was a time when it was completely destroyed however it was reintroduced by time. Common.
