Ferula communis (Giant Fennel)

Giant Fennel - photo by Stephen Gatt

This plant is usually found growing on rocky steppe, in disturbed habitats, in the maquis as well as the garique ecosystems.

It is a herbaceous perennial plant that can grow more than 2m in height. It is characterised by narrow segmented leaves which are curled and shiny. The yellow flowers which develop in spring form bouquets resembling umbrellas. The leaves are sometimes cut to make flowering arrangements more colourful. Very common.

In the photo, one can see a branch of the giant fennel that has shed all the seeds.
