Malta vs. Portugall: Għal Gilbert
Agius logħba diffiċli iżda ta' motivazzjoni
|
Manuel GAUCI
4 ta' Settembru, 2008
17:24 CET |
Il-Captain Nazzjonali
Gilbert Agius qal li din l-ewwel logħba ta' kompetizzjoni ġdida
hi logħba diffiċli ħafna u għall-players tista' tkun ta'
motivazzjoni żejda. Hu qal li l-players huma konvinti li se
jagħtu dak kollu li jistgħu u jekk ikunu dixxiplinati jistgħu
joħolqu sorpriża bħal fil-logħbiet tal-Euro 2008 kontra l-Ungerija
u t-Turkija.
Agius qal li fl-aħħar logħbiet l-appoġġ
tal-pubbliku kien importanti, bir-riżultat li kemm il-pubbliku
kif ukoll il-players kienu sodisfatti u kuntenti. Dwar
il-Portugall, Agius qal li dan it-Tim għandu players fantastiċi,
u jkun żball li nħalluhom jiġu f'pożizzjoni ta' player kontra
player. |

Tazza tad-Dinja 2010 - Malta v Portugall
- illum f’Ta’ Qali - fit-8.00p.m.
- Fitzel qed ifittex riżultat rispettabbli |
|
Illum, fit-8.00 p.m.,
tintlagħab il-logħba tant mistennija li ilna
nisimgħu ħafna dwarha bejn Malta u Portugall, valida
minn Grupp 1 ta’ kwalifikazzjoni għat-Tazza tad-Dinja,
2010, liema edizzjoni finali se tintlagħb fl-Afrika
ta’ Isfel.
Il-bieraħ fil-għaxija, l-iskwadra Maltija kellha l-aħħar
sessjoni ta’ taħriġ li b’hekk temmet ġimgħat ta’
preparazzjoni għal-lum liema preparamenti nkludew
anke training camp impenjattiv fl-Estonja, fejn
f’wirja tajba anke konna sfortunati li tlifna 2-1 u
ma ġibniex draw minn dik il-partita.
|
Nhar il-Ħamis li għadda,
il-kowċ nazzjonali Dusan Fitzel (ritratt), naqqas l-iskwadra
minn tmienja u għoxrin għal ghoxrin plejer fejn
tħallew barra Andrè Schembri, li jrid jiskonta
logħba sospensjoni, Ian Azzopardi li kellu jirtira
minħabba raġunijiet personali waqt li xi ftit
sorprendenti kienet l-esklużjoni tad-difensur Belti,
Josef Mifsud, u tal-midfielder ta’ Marsaxlokk Gareth
Sciberras.
Parti mill-iskwadra finali ta’ għoxrin, li tonqos
għal tmintax il-lejla siegħa qabel il-partita, se
jagħmlu l-vjaġġ qasir fejn jinsabu alloġġjati,
f’Ħal-Balzan, għal Ta’ Qali anke Rode-rick Bajada li
rritorna s-Sibt li għadda għal Sliema (wara injury)
u Kevin Sammut wara l-esklużjoni diskuttibbli ta’
Mejju li għadda għall-vjaġġ lejn Graz għal-logħba ta’
ħbiberija kontra l-Awstrija.
Dan il-ġurnal tkellem mal-kowċ nazzjonali, Dusan
Fitzel, li tenna dwar l-importanza li nġibu riżultat
rispettabbli għalkemm konxji li se naffrontaw wieħed
mill-aħjar nazzjonijiet tad-dinja.
Bħas-soltu, il-kowċ Ċek ftit li xejn jagħti ħjiel
lill-ġurnalisti dwar il-formazzjoni finali iżda l-mistoqsijiet
tagħna tawna ħjiel aħjar ta’ min jistghu ikunu dawk
il-ħdax li llum se jibdew il-logħba.
Jidher li s’issa d-dubji huma tnejn, min se jimla
l-post vakant imħolli minn Ian Azzopardi fuq ix-xellug
tad-difiża u s-sistema li Fitzel mistenni jadotta
jekk hux dik ta’ 4-4-2 jew inkella jaqleb għal 4-5-1
minħabba n-nuqqas ta’ Andrè Schembri.
Dwar l-ewwel dubju jidher li t-taqtiegħa qiegħda
bejn Sean Bajada, Steve Wellman u Kenneth Scicluna
bid-difensur ta’ Marsaxlokk Stephen Wellman li
jinsab ftit favorit fuq it-tnejn l-oħra.
Min-naħa l-oħra, il-possibbil-tajiet jidhru ikbar li
Fitzel xorta jżomm is-sistema li tant ġabitlu
suċċess kemm ilu kowċ naz-zjonali, dik ta’ 4-4-2,
bl-attakkant Etienne Barbara huwa l-favorit li
jifforma parti fl-attakk flimkien ma’ Michael Mifsud
minħabba l-erperjenza li qed jikseb barra minn
xtutna.
Wieħed jirrimarka li Scerri kellu bidu pożittiv
għall-kampjonat ma’ Hibernians iżda jidher li hija
prerogattiva tal-kowċ Malti li jippreferi plejers li
jilagħbu f’kampjonat barra ‘l pajjiż.
L-istess ħaġa jidher li se jagħ-mel għal bejn
il-lasti fejn Justin Haber jidher preferut fuq Mario
Muscat minkejja li Haber għadu ma lagħabx partita
waħda kompetittiva dan l-istaġun minn mindu ingħaqad
ma’ Sheffield United.
Wieħed jirrimarka, iżda, li anke l-veteran Muscat
għadu kemm irritorna wara li kien ma jiflaħx sa nofs
din il-ġimgħa.
Formazzjoni Maltija probabbli:
1. Justin Haber
2. Roderick Briffa
3. Stephen Wellman
4. Brian Said
5. Luke Dimech
6. Jamie Pace
7. Gilbert Agius
8. Ivan Woods
9. Kevin Sammut
10. Michael Mifsud
11. Etienne Barbara

2010 World Cup - Malta vs Portugal
Fitzel banking on crowd boost for clash with
'giants'
Sliema defender Azzopardi pulls out of squad for
personal reasons
Kevin Azzopardi
National coach Dusan Fitzel wanted Malta to host
Portugal in their opening World Cup 2010 qualifier
in the hope that the visitors' glamour and
reputation would attract a sell-out crowd to the
National Stadium. Describing Portugal as 'giants
of world football', the Malta coach said his
decision to press for a curtain-raiser against the
best team in Group One was also influenced by his
expectation of a Portuguese triumph at Euro 2008.
Portugal were knocked out by Germany in the
quarter-finals.
"I wanted Malta to play the first World Cup
qualifier against Portugal," Fitzel told a news
conference yesterday. "Malta assumed a leading role
during the discussions on the fixtures for our group
and I was surprised that I only had to make two
changes to my proposed schedule.
"I honestly expected Portugal to reach the final
of Euro 2008 and I wanted them to start their World
Cup campaign against us in order to fill the
stadium. My wish is to see another record crowd at
Ta' Qali and then I can leave," Fitzel added with a
smile. The other teams in Group One are Sweden,
Denmark, Hungary and Albania.
Fitzel remarked that one only has to look at the
names at Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz's disposal to
understand the magnitude of the task awaiting Malta
in tomorrow's qualifier, kicking off at 8 p.m.
"Portugal have got some fantastic players,"
Fitzel observed.
"Some of them would surely be included in any
selection of the world's best XI. Most of their
players are with top clubs, like Real Madrid,
Chelsea and Manchester United whereas the majority
of our players come from local clubs. We are playing
against giants of world football and this match is
going to be a big challenge for us.
"When I edited the video of the Portugal-Faroe
Islands friendly (5-0), I enjoyed watching the game
because their players like to express themselves,
they play to have fun.
"That said, I've been preparing my team for this
test for the last three to four weeks. My aim is to
show that we are doing a good job here."
Although tomorrow's qualifier is shaping up as a
mismatch, Fitzel ruled out the possibility of a
man-marking strategy.
"There will be no man-to-man marking because this
approach will not work against a team like
Portugal," Fitzel claimed."Tell me, which players
can we mark man-to-man... Nani, Deco, Almeida, Simao
Sabrosa? We have to play as a team and if we fail to
do that, we will have serious problems during the
game."
Fitzel has named a 20-man squad for tomorrow's
qualifier and will only trim the list to 18 on
matchday.
Sliema Wanderers defender Ian Azzopardi, scorer
of Malta's goal in the 2-1 defeat to Estonia in a
friendly last month, has pulled out of the squad to
be near his father who is seriously ill while
Valletta's Josef Mifsud has been dropped. Andrew
Cohen, the Hibs forward, is recovering from injury
and Andrè Schembri, who plays for German club Carl
Zeiss Jena, is ruled out by a one-match ban.
As Valletta goalkeeper Andrew Hogg has yet to
fully recover from a calf problem, Justin Haber is a
certainty to start tomorrow. Fitzel is concerned
about Haber's lack of first-team opportunities since
he joined English club Sheffield United but he has
not lost faith in the 27-year-old's abilities.
"We are struggling with goalkeepers at the
moment," Fitzel said. "Andrew Hogg is injured and
it's unfortunate because he improved a lot in the
past year.
"Justin has moved abroad and sometimes I ask
myself 'what for', because he's not playing. In the
last three seasons, Haber must have played around 25
games in all but he's still part of the squad
because I believe he's a very promising goalkeeper.
He has got personality and has established himself
as an important player for the national team."
Malta captain Gilbert Agius is looking forward to
tomorrow's clash with Portugal. "It's the first game
of a new competition," Agius, who has played 108
times for Malta, said.
"It will be a very difficult match for us but the
prospect of facing a strong team like Portugal
should give us added motivation. It's going to be a
special occasion and we will be striving to put up a
strong performance."

World Cup 2010 - Malta vs Portugal
Turkey heroics an inspiration for
Fitzel's men
Scerri set to partner Mifsud in
Malta's attack
Kevin Azzopardi
Almost a year to the date Malta
astounded the world of football by
holding Turkey to a two-all draw in
a Euro 2008 qualifier at the
National Stadium. A repeat of that
heart-on-sleeve performance is what
Malta will be looking to produce
this evening when they begin their
2010 World Cup qualifying campaign
with a daunting match against
heavyweights Portugal.
The prospect of locking horns
with a Portugal team brimming with
some of the world's most talented
footballers is bound to intimidate
any opposition, never mind tiny
Malta.
The likelihood is that the
Portuguese will prove too strong for
Malta as they look to give Carlos
Queiroz his first competitive win in
his second spell as Portugal coach.
Queiroz returned to his old job
after Luiz Felipe Scolari, who led
Portugal to the Euro 2008
quarter-finals, resigned to take
charge of Chelsea.
Going into an international game
as underdogs is not a novelty for
the Maltese players who, on a few
occasions in recent past, succeeded
in frustrating opponents in
important qualifiers.
National coach Dusan Fitzel hopes
that his players will be up to the
task but knows that Malta will have
their work cut out by the likes of
Deco, Nani and Simao.
Having dissected Portugal's
showing in the 5-0 defeat of the
Faroe Islands in a friendly last
month, Fitzel doesn't envisage a
change in tactics by Queiroz.
"Portugal teams, from the youths
right through to the seniors, play
4-3-3 because it's a strategy that
brings the best out of their skilful
players," Fitzel told The Times
yesterday.
"They stuck with 4-3-3 against
Faroe Islands and I don't think they
will change their approach for this
game."
In last month's friendly against
Estonia, which Malta lost 2-1,
Fitzel experimented with a few
tactical variations but he has no
intention to tinker with his
gameplan for tonight's qualifier
which is expected to draw a bumper
crowd to the National Stadium.
"The 4-2-3-1 strategy is best
suited for the characteristics of
our team, I haven't changed my mind
about that," Fitzel said.
"I think the players are now
familiar with this system, they know
what is expected of them. In
training, we have done a lot of
tactical work to try and counter
Portugal's rotation on the flanks
and their movement in the middle but
they've got enormous quality."
Portugal are blessed with an
abundance of brilliant players and
Queiroz will be able to count on
such stars as Deco, now at Chelsea,
Nani, the Manchester United winger,
Atletico Madrid's Simao and Moutinho,
the Sporting Lisbon midfielder.
Deco threat
Fitzel was at pains to single out
the one player he thinks will pose
the greatest threat but after a
thoughtful pause, he replied:
"There are four or five fantastic
players in the Portuguese team but
Deco is outstanding. He's their main
man in midfield, an attack-minded
and creative player.
"Then there's Nani and I've also
been impressed with the performance
of Almeida in the friendly against
Faroe Islands. He gave the defenders
a hard time."
Such a collection of top-class
players at Queiroz's disposal and
yet, the greatest entertainer of
them all, Manchester United's
Cristiano Ronaldo, is missing as he
continues his recovery from ankle
surgery.
Given Ronaldo's individual
magnificence, his absence will come
as a relief for the Maltese but
Fitzel offered a different
perspective.
"Ronaldo and Nani both play for
Manchester United and their
qualities are very similar," Fitzel
said.
"Ronaldo is coming from a great
season but I think Nani is more than
an adequate replacement for him.
"Nevertheless, as a coach, I want
to see the best players on the pitch
because that poses a greater
challenge for the players and also
excites the fans."
Typically, Fitzel gave nothing
away about his team selection but
the indications from training are
that the Malta coach may well opt
for Terrence Scerri as Andrè
Schembri's replacement. The lanky
striker has been on fire for Hibs,
scoring three goals in their opening
two league games.
Schembri, now at German club Carl
Zeiss Jena, is ruled out by a
one-match ban but is with the rest
of the squad as he will be available
to play in Wednesday's qualifier
away to Albania.
The one certainty is that Fitzel
will keep faith with his
tried-and-trusted players, the likes
of Michael Mifsud, who will lead
Malta's attack, midfielders Gilbert
Agius and Jamie Pace, and central
defenders Brian Said and Luke Dimech.
Goalkeeper Justin Haber will guard
Malta's goal today.
The other positions were up for
grabs until yesterday evening's
training session, especially the
left-back role after Ian Azzopardi
withdrew from the squad to spend
time with his father who is
seriously ill.
Shaun Bajada and Steve Wellman
are vying for patrolling duties on
the left side of Malta's four-man
defence and Roderick Briffa looks
favourite to assume the right-back
role.
Three players, George Mallia,
Kevin Sammut and Ivan Woods, are the
main contenders for the two wide
midfield positions.
Fitzel reckons Mifsud, Malta's
most famous player, remains the
team's chief attacking weapon.
"Even when he's not at the top of
his form, Michael is still our most
dangerous player," Fitzel remarked.
"If you look at his performances
in the past, Michael has always been
at the centre of our attacking
moves, he's always involved and all
our opponents know about him."
The closure of the summer
transfer window has brought to an
end the uncertainty surrounding
Mifsud's position at Coventry City,
at least for the next four months,
after his £1.5 million move to
Bristol City collapsed at the last
minute.
Said Fitzel: "Transfer issues
affect players but now that the
transfer window is closed, Michael
knows that he is still a Coventry
player. He's been playing regularly
lately and things look to have
settled down."

Playing against Portugal in Group
1 of the FIFA WorldCup Qualifiers 2010 South Africa, was always
going to be a daunting task, especially since they have some of
the best talent in European football at the moment. Despite
this, our players never felt inhibited and were determined to
show off their strengths, skills and talents as best they could.
They worked hard at this for 60 minutes, but the second goal
went a long way toward demoralising our players. At this point
in the match, as the Portuguese scored their second goal, a
chorus cheer went up from the South Stand, started off by the
South End Core. This was certainly very welcome and surely an
encouraging shout to the players in that critical moment, which
went a long way towards spurring them on. |
|
It is a pleasure to see
such a crowd at our National Stadium, clad in what is now a
prestigious black t-shirt bearing the Maltese eight-pointed
cross on the front. The white and red flags, the banners and the
joyous atmosphere are certain crowd pullers. Surely a patriotic
feeling has been instilled of late and it can be heard in
typical Maltese chants by the South End Core, imitated by the
rest of the spectators around the stadium. The power cut due to
intensive heat did very little to dampen people's spirits, and a
contagious Mexican wave swept the stadium.I
n the first 20 minutes the match
was balanced with some mistakes coming more from the Portuguese
side which took a lot of time to settle down and adapt to the
pitch conditions as Coach Quieroz himself said in the press
conference after. The first mistake by the Maltese proved to be
deadly as the defence gave too much space to Nani whose pass was
deflected in our own net. From thereon till the end of the first
half we had sporadic attempts and a great save by Justin Haber
in goal.
Mallia substituted the
injured Woods 14 minutes in the second half in a forced change.
It was 3 minutes after that Hugo Almeida made it 0-2 when off a
diagonal pass he found space to beat Haber with a low
unstoppable shot. The shout of Malta Malta was once again heard
to the beat of the South End Core drums who tried as they could
to inspire our team.
Scoring chances for Malta
where very few with Michael Mifsud well covered especially
because he was playing in a retracted position in attack rather
then as the main striker.
Simao made it 3 when a shot
was parried by Haber in the Portuguese number 11 legs only for
him to blast it into an empty net.
What looked like an obvious
offside resulted in a goal for Nani which was then on booed for
his antics and sarcastic claps towards the Maltese supporters.
The change of Barbara instead
of the subdued Scerri in attack, with Pepe always making sure
that Terrence never got to the ball, was well wanted as the
number 5 Etienne tried hard to challenge the Portuguese defence.
With 10 minutes to go the
tired Captain Gilbert Aguis who had a great first half
controlling and dispatching new attacks was substituted with
young Ryan Fenech who had no time to impose himself in the
match.
Coach Dusan Fitsel in the
press conference showed his dissapointment on his player’s
concentration levels and how his team did not manage to cover
well in the wings.
At the end of the match Dr.
Mifsud commented "We played against a tough team and we knew it
was going to be difficult, but with the fans on our side you
never know what could happen. They never stopped clapping and
encouraging our players and to this we would like to thank the
supporters club, the South End Core, who are doing a wonderful
job in their efforts to provide the right stadium atmosphere."

ta' 4-0 kontra t-Tim qawwi tal-Portugall fl-ewwel

mill-ewwel għar-rebħa, tant li mill-ewwel mumenti
bdew jattakkaw lejn il-lasti tal-goalkeeper Malti
Justin Haber. Il-logħba ta' kwalifikazzjoni kienet
interrotta fis-seba' minuta minħabba problemi

Portugal outclass Malta |

Star-studded Portugal were
Malta's first opponents in the 2010 World Cup campaign at the
National Stadium yesterday. |
|
|
|
Coming a year after Malta's
excellent performance in the 2-2 draw with Turkey, local fans
harboured hopes of another odd-defying coup but it was not to
be. |
|
|
|
The elegant Portuguese were just
too strong, too classy for their Maltese counterparts who, bar a
handful of sporadic breakaways in the opening half, were
non-existent as an attacking force to the extent that Portugal
goalkeeper Quim was not tested once. |
|
|
|
After surging ahead in a first
half that featured an eight-minute pause due to a power failure,
Portugal relied on their subtle technical skills and tactical
nous to break down a resolute but limited Maltese team. |
|
|
|
Malta had coped well in the first
half but the gulf in class between the two teams grew more and
more evident as the game wore on. Dusan Fitzel's men were
reduced to chasing shadows in all areas of the pitch as the
likes of Deco, Nani and the impressive right-back Bosingwa ran
the Maltese defence ragged. |
|
|
|
Outclassed by Portugal, Malta
must now forget this drubbing as quickly as possible and
concentrate on their next game, away to Albania on Wednesday
when striker Andrè Schembri will be available after seeing out
his one-match ban yesterday. |
|
|
|
As kick-off loomed, the decibel
level at the National Stadium rose, the Maltese fans responding
to calls from pitchside 'to make some noise'. |
|
|
|
The enthusiasm of the large home
crowd increased as the two teams walked onto the pitch for the
start of the game. |

A rousing rendition of the
Maltese national team by Ivan Grech, the frontman of leading
local band Wintermoods, was greeted with raucous applause by the
supporters. |
|
|
|
Living up to their promise to
boost the support for the national team, the South End Core
decorated the curve with large banners, flags and balloons while
red and white confetti were released into the air. |
|
|
|
Terrence Scerri's scoring form
for Hibs at this early stage of the 2008-09 didn't go unnoticed
by Fitzel who handed the lanky striker a starting role. Scerri
was Malta's most advanced player yesterday with the pesky
Michael Mifsud playing off his shoulder. |
|
|
|
Fitzel's tried-and-trusted
personnel, the likes of goalkeeper Justin Haber, defenders Brian
Said and Luke Dimech and midfielders Gilbert Agius, Jamie Pace
and Ivan Woods were all included in Malta's initial XI.
Birkirkara's Shaun Bajada stepped into the boots of the
unavailable Ian Azzopardi at left-back while Roderick Briffa
started at right-back. |
|
|
|
Ivan Woods was preferred to
George Mallia on the right side of Malta's midfield while Kevin
Sammut was deployed on the left. |
|
|
|
Of the 20-man squad named by
Fitzel last Thursday, Steve Wellman and Roderick Bajada were the
ones who failed to make the cut yesterday. |
|
|
|
Carlos Quieroz, the Portugal
coach, had Werder Bremen's Hugo Almeida as his central striker
with Manchester United's Nani and Atletico Madrid's Simao
Sabrosa operating on the wings. |
|
|
|
Four minutes into the game, Pepe
drove his shot over the bar after pouncing on a short clearance
by Woods following a corner by Simao Sabrosa. |
|
|
|
A power failure at the National
Stadium inside the opening 10 minutes of the game led Dutch
referee Raymond Blom to interrupt the match due to inadequate
lighting, much to the annoyance of the fans. |
|
|
|
The match resumed after an
eight-minute pause with a corner for Portugal that Haber did
well to punch clear. |
|
|
|
Mifsud's speed and perseverance
delighted the fans as the Coventry City forward almost hustled
Pepe out of possession in the Portugal box. |
|
|
|
Malta won a corner when Woods'
dipping free-kick took a deflection off a Portugal defender.
With Sammut's corner easily cleared by the Portugal defence,
danger loomed for Malta as the visitors broke on the counter but
Briffa did well to head away Simao's attempt at a cross. |
|
|
|
Malta had rarely been stretched
by Portugal in the opening exchanges but the first flowing move
by the visitors yielded a goal on 28 minutes. Bosingwa got
behind the backtracking Maltese defence and delivered a low
cross from the right which Said deflected into his own net in an
attempt to clear. |
|
|
|
With Deco dictating matters from
midfield, Portugal now established a foothold in the match but
Malta did manage to unsettle the opposing defence once when
Sammut set Mifsud on a run in a two-against-two situation.
Maltese optimism fell when the on-rushing Pace failed to control
the ball after receiving a pass from Mifsud. |
|
|
|
Malta spent the remainder of the
first half soaking up Portugal's pressure without ever
threatening to get an equaliser as Mifsud and Scerri were forced
to feed on scraps. |
|
|
|
Both Fitzel and Queiroz made no
changes to their teams during half-time. |
|
|
|
Nine minutes into the second
half, Nani turned well inside the box but his low strike was
easily blocked by Haber. Moments later, Dimech came to Bajada's
rescue by nudging the ball away from Almeida who had intercepted
a wayward backpass by the Birkirkara midfielder. |
|
|
|
Said and Haber also effected two
salvaging effects to deny Simao and Nani in quick succession
after Bosingwa had again tormented Malta with a strong run down
the right. |
|
|
|
Fitzel's first substitution came
after 13 minutes of the second half, Mallia coming on for Woods.
Three minutes later, Portugal increased their lead, Almeida
surprising Haber with a strong low shot from outside the box. |
|
|
|
Getting on the end of a
throughball from midfield, Nani advanced menacingly but he
stroked the ball just wide of the far post as Haber rushed out
to close the angle. It was now a matter of when not if would
Portugal extend their lead and Simao Sabrosa scored goal no.3.
The Portugal skipper fired home from close range after Haber had
parried Nani's effort. |
|
|
|
Joao Moutinho, who had just
replaced Simao, would have left an instant mark on the game but
for Haber who repelled his grounder after some fine work by the
outstanding Deco. |
|
|
|
Twelve minutes from time, Nani
got in on the scoring act when lifting the ball over Haber from
close range amid more woeful defending by the tiring hosts. |
|
|
|
Five minutes from time, Haber
denied Portugal a fifth goal when pushing away a downward header
by substitute Maniche. |
|
|
|
Aftermatch comments |
|
|
|
Dusan Fitzel (Malta coach):
"To be sincere the match turned out how I
had expected it to be. In the run-up to the match I had tried to
work with the players to improve their level of concentration.
However, today we only played well for the first 20 minutes when
we succeeded in covering the flanks. The 4-0 result was very
difficult to accept." |
|
|
|
Carlos Queiroz (Portugal coach):
"Malta created some dangerous situations in the opening
exchanges of the match during which my players took too much
time to adapt to the pitch conditions. Slowly the team started
to improve and I'm pleased that my players kept the rhythm and
persistence throughout the whole match. |
|
|
|
"When we scored the second goal
Malta lost its motivation and then it was easy for us to control
the proceedings. I hope that Malta will put up better
performances against the other teams in the group at Ta' Qali." |

Fl-ewwel logħba fi Grupp 1 tal-kwalifikazzjoni tat-Tazza
tad-Dinja 2010, it-tim nazzjonali Malti sofra telfa
bl-iskor ta’ 4-0 kontra l-Portugall f’logħba li fiha
l-Maltin qatt ma rnexxielhom jidħlu fiha.
Għalkemm ma kellhomx xi wirja ta’ barra minn hawn,
il-Portugiżi wrew il-qawwa tagħhom meta b’logħob
kalm iżda maħsub bdew iqassmu l-ballun kontinwament
sakemm jirnexxielhom jinfdu d-difiża Maltija, u
b’mod partikolari fit-tieni taqsima, huma heddew
kontinwament il-lasti ta’ Justin Haber waqt li
l-Maltin lanqas irnexxielna nagħtu xutt wieħed
dirett lejn il-lasti ta’ Quim.
Mill-formazzjoni inizjali li Dusan Fitzel kien
mistenni li jibda biha din il-logħba, l-unika
sorpriża li kien hemm kien li Fitzel għażel li jibda
lil Terence Scerri minflok Etienne Barbara, biex
b’Ivan Woods jilgħab irtirat, waqt li Stephen
Wellman lanqas biss kien mgħajjat mat-tmintax.
Min-naħa tal-Portugall, Carlos Queiroz għażel li
jħalli barra mill-ewwel ħdax, plejers bħal Nuno
Gomes, Maniche u Paulo Ferriera għalkemm plejers
bħal Deco, Pepe, Nani u Sabrosa żgur li huma
ismijiet li ftit nazzjonijiet għandhom bħalhom.
L-ewwel azzjoni tal-logħba waslet fil-ħames minuta
meta minn azzjoni ta’ korner mogħti minn Deco,
inħolqot konfużjoni fil-kaxxa Maltija u Sabrosa
qassam lejn id-difensur ta’ Real Madrid, Pepe, li
ttanta xortih b’xutt mill-ewwel minn tarf il-kaxxa
bix-xutt tiegħu jgħaddi jħakkek mal-mimduda.
Minuta wara, bil-Portugiżi jirbħu korner fuq
il-lemin, tbaxxa d-dawl tal-Istadium Nazzjonali
bir-referi Olandiż, Raymond B. Blom iwaqqaf
il-logħob għal madwar 11-il minuta, bil-plejers
taż-żewġ naħat jaħtfu l-okkażjoni biex jieħdu
struzzjonijiet mingħand il-kowċis tagħhom fl-istess
waqt li ji-xorbu.
Għalkemm ma kienux daqstant perikolużi, il-Portugiżi
komplew jagħfsu u fit-23 minuta, minn frikik ta’
Deco, reġa’ kien Pepe li ttanta xortih b’daqqa ta’
ras mill-viċin li għaddiet ftit barra.
Wara din l-azzjoni kellna mument tajjeb għall-Maltin
fejn ersaqna lejn il-lasti ta’ Quim fejn anki rbaħna
korner, u f’dan il-mument it-tim immexxi minn Carlos
Queiroz deher xi ftit nervuż tant li beda jiżbalja
passes relattivament faċli.
Iżda bħalma jiġri f’logħbiet ta’ dan il-livell, fl-aħjar
ħin tal-Maltin, wasal il-gowl tal-vantaġġ
tal-avversarji. Kien fis-36 minuta meta Nani u
Bosingwa qassmu l-ballun bejniethom fuq ix-xellug, u
bid-difensur ta’ Chealsea jidħol fil-kaxxa żmarkat
għall-aħħar, huwa kkrossja fil-baxx u Brian Said,
fit-tentattiv li jikklerja, xeħet il-ballun wara
dahar Justin Haber għall-awto-gowl klassiku.
Fl-44 minuta kien Sabrosa li naqas li jolqot
il-ballun minn ftit passi bogħod wara pass ta’ Hugo
Almeida, biex tliet minuti wara kien hemm lob ta’
Nani, bil-gowlkiper Malti jtir minn tulu u jsalva
f’korner. Din kienet l-aħħar azzjoni ta’ l-ewwel
taqsima li għalqet bil-vantaġġ minimu tal-Portugiżi.
Fit-tieni taqsima l-andament tal-logħba baqa’ l-istess
fejn il-Portugiżi komplew jippressaw bid-difiża
Maltija tkun waħda kompatta u ftit bdiet tagħti ċans
lil Almeida u sħabu jittantaw xortihom lejn il-lasti
ta’ Haber.
Madankollu, fil-61 minuta, il-Portugiżi rduppjaw.
Kontrattak veloċi bil-ballun jasal għand HUGO
ALMEIDA li wara li kkontrolla, fajjar xutt minn tarf
il-kaxxa li ħasad għal kollox lil Haber bil-ballun
jaħbat mal-wieqfa qabel spiċċa fix-xibka.
Dan il-gowl bħal mewwet il-motivazzjoni tal-plejers
Maltin bil-Portugiżi jibqgħu ġejjin fit-tentattiv li
jkabbru l-iskor. Fil-65 minuta kien is-sostitut
Maniche, li fl-istaġun li għadda rebaħ l-Iscudetto
ma’ Inter, li b’pass perfett minn nofs il-grawnd
żmarka tajjeb lil Nani li antiċipa l-ħarġa ta’ Haber
iżda tawwal il-ballun li spiċċa barra.
Fil-71 minuta l-iskor sar 3-0 meta xutt minn tarf
il-kaxxa ta’ Nani kien salvat parzjalment minn Haber
bil-ballun jispiċċa f’saqajn SIMAO SABROSA li minn
ftit passi bogħod ma kellux diffikulta jixħet
il-ballun f’xibka vojta.
Seba’ minuti wara l-iskor kompla jikber meta wara
azzjoni personali, il-plejer ta’ Manchester United,
NANI, qabeż lil Dimech u mill-viċin qabbeż il-ballun
minn fuq Haber għar-raba’ gowl Portugiż biex b’dan
l-iskor intemmet din il-partita.

Football –
2010 World Cup Qualifier: Toiling Malta demolished by classy
Portugal |
Malta -
Portugal 0-4
SILVIO VELLA
Malta's start in the qualifying campaign for the
2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, was not an
encouraging one. Although playing against one of
the top world football countries, ranked ninth
by FIFA, with a myriad of stars in their team,
Malta's biggest disappointment yesterday was the
flaccid performance they put up.
The final scoreline aside, the Maltese national
team created very little, if anything, to excite
the bumper crowd at Ta' Qali. Suffice to say,
Malta had no shot on goal in the entire match.
Although second best throughout, Malta somehow
held on and only an own goal by defender Said,
saw Portugal take a slim one-goal lead by
halftime, albeit well deserved.
But the second half was like shooting fish in a
barrel, as Malta was completely outplayed by the
power wing play of the Portuguese which they
ably adopt in a 4-3-3 module.
Portugal eventually ended up most worthy
winners, off to an encouraging start for their
new coach Carlos Queiroz, in a difficult
qualifying Group.
There were hardly any surprises in Malta's
starting line-up, except that Shaun Bajada
played at left back for Ian Azzopardi while
Terence Scerri was included in attack instead of
the suspended Andre Schembri, preferred to
Barbara by coach Fitzel.
The initial 4-2-3-1 formation was often rendered
a defensive 4-5-1 as Portugal discovered their
pace and rhythm after a quite first half hour.
The match had an abrupt stop after only six
minutes, by which time Portugal had already
fabricated a good choral move ending with a Pepe
shot from the edge of the area going slightly
over, because of a power failure in part of the
floodlights. Dutch referee Blom halted play for
about ten minutes until the lighting system was
restored to normal.
Portugal remained dominant in possession but
hardly menacing in their penetration as Malta
often had seven or eight players behind the
ball. Having said that, the towering presence of
Bremen's striker Almeida inside the Malta area,
always posed threat for our rearguard.
Deco was always the point of reference in
midfield and dangerous with his passes. His free
kick on 12 minutes was headed narrowly wide by
Almeida.
Portugal's biggest threat in the first half
though came from the runs and crosses down their
right flank from Nani and Bonsingwa.
One of Nani's such crosses, after 26 minutes,
was deflected by defender Brian Said to put
keeper Haber off balance and give Portugal the
lead. If that looked lucky for the visitors,
they justified their lead before halftime with
two other chances.
Past the half hour, Bosingwa's dangerous cross
from the right was headed towards the middle by
Almeida, standing at the far post, but luckily
for Malta, Simao stumbled on the ball and failed
to conclude.
Soon after, on Almeida's pass, Nani's exquisite
dipper demanded an elastic save from Haber, who
stretched himself to turn the ball over the post
into a corner.
Malta's attacking play was restricted to a
couple of runs and dribbles by Mifsud,
accelerating from midfield, but often challenged
by two or three players to bar his progress.
Malta forced only one corner kick midway through
the half when a Woods' deepe free kick from the
left was deflected off the Portuguese defence.
Portugal pressed us hard after the restart. Nani
was shifted to the left and Simao to the right,
as Bonsingwa's overlaps increased in frequency.
Receiving a Deco pass, the Chelsea defender sent
a dangerous cross for Almeida, but Said headed
into a corner.
Almeida headed another Bonsingwa cross narrowly
wide before Haber had to rush out on Nani,
presented with the ball by Simao.
On 58 minutes, Malta substituted Woods with
George Mallia but only three minutes later
conceded the second goal. Hugo Almeida took
possession on a loose ball kicked inside the
Malta half and beat Haber with a diagonal low
shot from the edge of the area.
Malta seemed to lose their composure. Martins
shot Deco's pass wide by a whisker for another
Portugal close shave.
On 70 minutes, Etienne Barbara went in for
Scerri as Portugal also took off Martins and
Almeida for Maniche and Nuno Gomes.
On 72 minutes Portugal increased their lead.
Nani crossed low from the right, the grounded
Haber palmed the ball out into the path of the
unmarked Simao who had the easiest of tasks to
score in front of a gaping goal.
Portugal kept going forward, with hardly any
opposition from a demorilised Malta side. It was
practically down to Justin Haber to try and
avoid further derision. He footed out substitute
Moutinho's close range shot on a Deco cross, but
was rendered helpless again on 78 minutes when
Nani was put clear after good work by Deco, to
score Porugal's fourth goal.
Despite Ryan Fenech's inclusion for Agius,
Porugal kept creating more chances, and fluffing
them. Gomes headed flick on Antunes' cross,
whizzed just wide and then Haber was up to task,
saving Maniche's header on a Gomes cross.
With the dominant Portuguese always likely to
add more goals, the final whistle must have come
as a relief for the Maltese side, on a
disappointing evening for local football.
