Carob Tree
(Ceratonia siliqua) by Stephen Gatt This evergreen tree can grow up to 10m in height. It has compound leaves. Flowers that have no petals grow in small clusters from old branches, in the same place every year. The male and female flowers grow on different trees and the carobs (photo) form on female trees only. This tree flowers in autumn. It grows in the maquis, in valleys and in the fields. Most probably it is indigenous to the East of the Mediterranean and was introduced here a long time ago. Common.
